On November 5 2014, the Oklahoma Sooners executed a uniform unveil that caught my attention:
Uniform unveils have become quite “thing” in college sports, but I really love this from Oklahoma because it’s simple, easy to execute and pushes the boundary of Twitter. So, what can be taken away from it? There are two main things:
- Innovative doesn’t have to be complicated.
If you work in social media, then there’s a good chance you’re looking to innovate. Sometimes we get so caught up in what is bright and shiny though that our vision gets clouded. Here’s the beauty in this move from @OU_Football: It proves that innovative doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, sometimes simple works best. Don’t get too caught up in trying to make a splash; just focus on producing a finished product that gets the job done in stellar fashion. The rest will come.
- Forget boundaries.
What I love most about this uniform unveil is that it pushes the boundaries of Twitter, like Mercedes’ did with their great move on Instagram (which if you haven’t seen, you need to check out here). Sometimes we get too stuck on how we use the platforms that we fail to look outside the boundaries. If you can start with what you want to do and think creatively, you can come up with a solution. Don’t let best practices and protocol get in your way of coming up with a really stellar idea.
What does this mean for you? Well, this example from OU Athletics is something that can easily be replicated across teams and leagues. Think about all the things unveiled during a season: schedules, qualifiers, signees, starters, etc. How can you push the envelope? How can you keep announcements interesting and fresh? The options are endless, so start brainstorming!
As always, thanks for reading!
