A Look at Washington Athletics’ Uniform Reveal

Washington Athletics is celebrating a new era with a new look. This week they unveiled their Nike uniforms online, and they did a fantastic job with their online campaign.  Below are four keys to their success:

1. They varied content.
Washington fans were treated with many options when it came to consuming the information on the uniform reveal. Whether fans wanted to watch a video, go through a photo gallery, take a walk down memory lane or enjoy a pretty visual presentation on Exposure, the options were there. Here’s a list of everything they put together:

A Glimpse Into the Michigan Athletics Social Media Strategy

I have always admired Michigan Athletics’ social media presence from afar. They rock great graphics, their accounts have a consistent look and they clearly understand brand voice. Aside from that, I love that they have chosen to go against the grain and not create an overarching presence for their athletic department. Instead, they focus on each sport. Too often we follow everyone else’s lead in social media instead of evaluating what makes the most sense for our company. I admire their boldness. Jordan Maleh, the Director for Digital for Michigan Athletics, took some time to explain the why behind this move, their team structure, how they measure success and more.

I hope you enjoy the extremely valuable and detailed information from Jordan. It will give you a great picture of how Michigan Athletics has set out to create a rocking social media presence.

Rivalry Saturday: How the Opposition Stacks Up on Social Media

This is probably my favorite Saturday during the college football season…. Rivalry Saturday.  It’s a Saturday where passion is unparalleled, history rich, story lines emotional and outcomes unpredictable.

We all know the stats, the players, the predictions… but I thought I would take a different twist to Rivalry Saturday and take a look at the teams’ social media presence and how they match up. Below are some of the biggest rivalries today and how they stack up next to each other in the social space:

Auburn Athletics Leverages Football Momentum to Win in Socia Media

Auburn has had a phenomenal season in football.  Heading into this year’s Iron Bowl with a 10-1 record, their success on the field has not been overlooked.

What you might not have caught on to is the success Auburn has had in the social media space. The digital media team at Auburn has done a phenomenal job growing their audience AND getting them engaged (quality over quantity). And though I am a biased Auburn fan, statistics back me up on this one… Auburn sits at No. 1 in Facebook engagement for all athletic departments. I know winning helps, but there’s still an art and science to a good social media presence. Winning can only take you so far.

The digital team at Auburn did a great job covering the UGA-Auburn game last week, posting timely and emotionally charged content that compelled their fans to share. They also found big ways to capitalize on the infamous play, The Miracle at Jordan-Hare.

Friday Finds: 06.28.2013

In our industry, there is always something to learn. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why I started this blog– it helps me keep up with industry trends, know what others are doing in the space and think through applications.

Every week I stumble upon share-worthy pieces of content, digital packages, social media campaigns, etc. from teams, leagues and others in the industry.  But ecause there are so many great examples out there , and I can’t add commentary to everything, really good work (small or large) often goes unshared here.

Industry examples are a great way to get your creative thinking going though, so I thought I would start a regular column on Friday to highlight great digital pieces, social media campaigns and content from the past week. The column won’t be filled with a lot of commentary, but will serve as more of an inspiration board.  I hope you find it useful in some form or fashion.
